At the Hall of Mirrors in La Fortaleza, in front of several heads of agency and at least 25 members of the local and national press, governor Ricardo Rosselló discarded the notion that he is going to resign to his position, while he apologized for using vulgar words in a Telegram chat with a group of his closest advisors.
The Governor expressed shame for the arrests of the former Secretary of Education, Julia Keleher, the former administrator of Puerto Rico Health Insurance System (ASES), Ángela Ávila Marrero, the contractor Álberto Velázquez Piñol, the CEO of the firm BDO Puerto Rico, Fernando Scherrer Caillet; and subcontractors Glenda and Mayra Ponce Mendoza.
"I want to start by asking for your forgiveness for the expressions I have written in a private chat. I am the governor of Puerto Rico, but I am a human being with faults and virtues," said Rosselló.
"I used a private chat to release stress, without vacations, and after receiving unfounded attacks," the governor pointed out.
"None of this justifies the words I've said and wrote during that period of time," he added.
Rossello said that "privacy has been violated by a person who had been given the trust."
"I'm not going to quit working for Puerto Rico… we've had setbacks, but we've had successes,” he added.
When asked if he is a viable candidate to run for governor again, Rosselló replied, "I have always said that my results are my best letter of introduction.”
"Yes, I say bad words and yes I send memes, I do say sarcastic things and the truth is that I'm not proud of that, and when those things happen, that's why I wanted to start today asking for forgiveness, because one has to accept when their own failures, and I failed,” Rosselló said.
Regarding why he doesn’t publish the entire chat content, the governor said he cannot do it because "the chat was deleted", but he could not specify when.
Rosselló did not confirm nor deny that the person identified as "F do" in the Telegram chat is his former campaign director and former representative before the Financial Oversight Management Board (FOMB), Elías Sánchez.
"I have to see the document (of the messages). As I understand it, Elías was in that chat, but I do not know if he is F do, " governor said.
