White House Deputy Press Secretary Judd Deere reacted to “the unfortunate events of the past week in Puerto Rico,” stating that President Donald J. Trump was correct when he denounced corruption on the island.

Last week, two former public officials and several contractors were arrested on a fraud scheme of $15 million, and a private Telegram chat was released last week, in which Gov. Ricardo Rosselló made some statements that have sparked outrage among every sector on the island, with thousands of protesters convening in Old San Juan to demand the governor’s resignation.

“[The events] prove the President’s concerns about mismanagement, politization, and corruption have been valid,” Deere stated in declarations published by CBS journalist David Begnaud on the latter’s Twitter account.

“We remain committed to Puerto Rico’s recovery and steadfast in protecting taxpayers and the Puerto Rico survivors from political corruption and financial abuse,” the official added.

Last April, Trump had stated on his Twitter account, “the people of Puerto Rico are GREAT, but the politicians are incompetent or corrupt. Puerto Rico got far more money than Texas & Florida combined, yet their government can’t do anything right, the place is a mess – nothing works.”
